Otherworld Comic is drawn by me, Toby Gard.
I'm known for creating the character Lara Croft and designing the original Tomb Raider game back in 1996.
I now do game consultancy for which I have a website: Focalpointgames.com.
This comic came about after having worked on the Otherworld universe in various forms for several years. In 2009 I wrote a book based in the Otherworld but never managed to polish it enough to get it published. In 2010 I tried to pitch game concepts for Otherworld to games publishers but again, I had no luck. As a result, I decided that the best way I can see if there is an interest for the idea is to simply get it out there. (you can read more about that in this article.) While comics are not really my medium (I prefer interactive experiences) it's a medium I've always wanted to try ever since I was a wee lad.
While my artwork is not the greatest at the best of times, the style I have chosen to use for this comic is all about rapidity; I want you to read this story as soon as possible.
I personally find reading webcomics a bit frustrating because my reading experience always feels like a film cutting out mid-sentence. It's just too jarring for a narrative to end after every page. Therefore the number of pages I put out per week (normally somewhere in the region of 4-10) is defined by the smallest coherent chunk of story that will end with either a cliffhanger or a change of scene.
In this way, I want Otherworld to feel more like serialized entertainment something people want to check out every week. At the same time I want to give the story time to breathe- I want to be able to put two or three pages together without dialogue when the pacing calls for it, but I don't think it's fair to expect people to wait a month for me to paint those three pages up photoshop. So my stylistic choices are designed to let me communicate ideas clearly, quickly and in the least ugly way I am capable of at this pace.
After all is said and done, the proof i in the pudding. So if you haven't read yet, go to it! If you have, please do come back for more next week.
I hope you enjoy visiting the Otherworld as much I have.
